The amount of nuclear waste is expected to increase as the world becomes more reliant on nuclear energy. There are two main models regarding nuclear waste management: on-site and centralized storage; each model has it own set of security and management challenges.
Considering the amount of nuclear waste will grow beyond the capacity offered by commercial reactors, governments with nuclear capabilities need to develop locations for long-term storage. Mitigating risks such as transport security and information control is crucial in order to prevent illegally acquiring of nuclear waste for nefarious purposes.
