Dry radiological decontamination techniques could be beneficial in cases where transporting and controlling liquids saturated with hazardous radiological material would be inconvenient or dangerous. Dry radiological decontamination techniques could also benefit operations located in extreme environments unsuitable for liquids that could contain radiological materials, such as conditions that would cause water to freeze or cause health concerns for personnel using liquid-based decontamination approaches. This report summarizes several studies and technologies focused on dry decontamination products or containment platforms. This includes commercial-off-the-shelf technologies that have been assessed for their effectiveness on simulated radiological materials, as well as patents that have been generated for the neutralization of radiological threats.
