Through HDIAC’s Core Analysis Task (CAT), our team of subject matter experts, engineers, research analysts, and technical staff supported the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Special Operations Forces (SOF) Acquisition Technology and Logistics Branch regarding biometric characterization and target identification research and development (R&D) and science and technology (S&T) analysis for the SOF Warfighter. HDIAC’s team analyzed improvements and technologies of traditional biometric capture methods (i.e., cameras and radar platforms) and sought scientific and technical advances to adopt and integrate new tools, such as processing capabilities at the edge, identifying through obstructions, and incorporating the Internet of Things, and vast amounts of data collected by individuals, governments, and data-oriented corporations. In addition to the identification, research, and analysis of U.S. government-funded projects, HDIAC’s team identified novel technologies and capabilities that can be leveraged to identify individuals using biometric modalities from tactically relevant ranges. HDIAC’s team provided USSOCOM with a comprehensive analysis of S&T and R&D advances—prioritizing and ranking its recommendations for SOF Warfighter development over the next five to seven years to save time and money. As a result of HDIAC’s support, USSOCOM is pursuing technologies and capabilities identified through the CAT that will enhance the SOF Warfighters’ capabilities, platforms, and modalities to perform sensitive biometric missions and targeting requirements.
