Naval Research Laboratory
Jeffrey Reid is a research meteorologist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory’s (NRL’s) Marine Meteorology Division in Monterey, CA, where he works in aerosol observability, applied meteorology, and informatics on regional aerosol environments and boundary layer properties. His research focuses on developing realistic error characteristics for in situ and remote sensing data and propagating these characteristics into numerical and conceptual models of aerosol life-cycle and atmospheric transport/transformation. He began his professional career with the U.S. Navy, where he led several field missions directed toward aerosol parameterization development and model verification. Applying his knowledge of biomass burning, dust, sea salt, and pollution physics to develop operational systems and aerosol data assimilation at NRL, he was involved in projects that created the world’s first satellite-based, operational, global aerosol source function and optical depth data assimilation system. He has authored several review papers on biomass burning and is often consulted on developing and applying Earth science informatics for government, academia, and industry. Dr. Reid holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, where he studied chemical evolution and optical properties of biomass burning smoke.
