The Fundamentals of Explosives 3-day course examines the chemistry of explosives, the physics of detonation waves to include their initiation, and the issues involved in safe handling and characterizing these. Explosive output and coupling to surroundings, with specific applications to structural response, will also be discussed. Additional topics include terrorist bombings, the gathering/analysis/interpretation of evidence, improvised explosives, and explosive detection topics.
Course instructors include:
- Dr. James Kennedy – Retired from Sandia & Los Alamos National Laboratories, specialist in initiation and Gurney modeling.
- Dr. Jimmie Oxley – Professor of Chemistry, University of Rhode Island, specialist in explosive safety and analysis.
- Dr. Blaine Asay – Retired from Los Alamos National Lab, specialist in nonshock initiation, deflagration to detonation transition (DDT), and shock physics.
Two additional optional courses, (1) Explosive Analysis & Safety and (2) Photon Doppler Velocimetry, are available to attend on May 2nd and 3rd.
